ENV601 Advanced Environmental Toxicology

 

This course is an advanced course for Environmental Toxicology that is being offered in the undergraduate program. This course will review the current trend and issues in environmental toxicology with emphasis on the exposure assessment and the structure-activity relationship in order to predict the adverse effect of various chemical contaminants against ecosystem and human health.

 

ENV602 Aquatic Chemistry

Chemical processes in environmental systems, with an emphasis on equilibrium conditions in aquatic systems. The types of processes examined include reaction kinetics, acid-base chemistry, dissolution-precipitation, complexation, air-water exchange and oxidation-reduction reactions. Methods presented for describing chemical speciation include analytical and graphical techniques.


ENV604 Environmental Engineering Seminar

This course aims at enriching the student’s capability in presentation and discussion as a researcher. Not only professors from the university but also distinguished scholars from outside of the university are invited to give a talk in addition to the presentations by the students. Understanding of the current topics of interest to the environmental engineering fields is the prime objective of this course.

The most recent topics of interest in environmental engineering fields are chosen in this course. As such, topics will vary depending on the year of the offerring.

ENV609 Environmental Organic Chemistry

 

There are numerous nondegradable and bioaccumulative organic chemicals that cause harmful effects on ecosystems and human health. In this course, we will review the important characteristics of those chemicals in terms of their structure, interaction and transport in ecosystems, which will help us to design effective control measures against those chemicals.  


ENV6010 Special Topics in Water Quality and Treatment

This course will review the various aspects of water quality and treatment. Topics covered will include physico-chemical processes, disinfection, and some advance processes such as membrane and advanced oxidation processes (AOP), as well as groundwater treatment and point-of-use treatment. This course will be of use for civil and environmental engineers, public health and health care professionals, environmental scientists and bio-defense specialists.


ENV6011 Special Topics in Wastewater Engineering

This course will discuss some advance topics in current wastewater treatment and water reuse. Topics will be selected to give students an opportunity to be exposed to more current and advanced subjects in wastewater treatment and water reuse. This course will be of use for civil and environmental engineers, public health and health care professionals, and environmental scientists.


ENV6012 Special Topics in Environmental Microbiology

This course will review the various aspects of water quality and treatment. ENV6013 Microbiological Analysis for Environmental Samples

This course will review various microbiological analytical method for environmental pathogenic organisms. Topic will cover the methods of sample collection, processing and target detection. Especially, various detection method – cultural methods, microscopic methods, immunological methods, biochemical methods, and molecular biological methods – will be discussed in this class. This course will be of use for civil and environmental engineers, public health and health care professionals, environmental scientists and bio-defense specialists.

 

ENV6014 Special topic in Environmental mocrobiology

This course will discuss some advance topic in environmental microbiology. Topic will be selected to give student an opportunity to be exposed to more current and advanced subjects in environmental microbiology. This course will be of use for civil and environmental engineers, public health and health care professional, and environmental scientists.

 

ENV613 Advanced Industrial Wastewater Treatment Ⅰ

Soruces, types and concentrations of various industrial wastewaters are analyzed with respect to thjeir treatability, hazard, and environmental impacts. Various treatment options and processes are discussed.


ENV616 Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment I

In-depth discussion of the basic principles of the biological wastewater treatment are discussed here. Application to the domestic and industrial wasterwater are core of this course.


ENV618 Biological Wastewater Treatment

Basic principles of the biological wastewater treatment processes are discussed. Typiucal processes include activated sludge process, RBC and aerobic digestion process.


ENV619 Groundwater Engineering

Fate and transmission of pollutants in the groundwater and remediation of the polluted groundwater sites are discussed.


ENV623 Chemical Wastewater Treatment I

Fundamentals and applications of chemical processes used in water, wastewater and hazardous waste treatment systems. Topics include water and wastewater characterization, water softening, coagulation and flocculation, precipitation, ion exchange processes, absorption and adsorption, membrane separation.

 

ENV624 Chemical Wastewater Treatment II

Characteristics and application of chemicals such as Ion Exchange Resins, Coagulants and Flocculants, Acid and Alkali, Chemical Oxidants which are used in physicochemical processes of water, wastewater treatment  will be covered.


ENV631 Air Pollution Modeling1

Three dimensional photochemical air quality models will be introduced. The model inputs, parameterization, and output post-processing will be discussed. Emissions inventory, dispersion and diffusion, and photochemical reactions in the atmosphere are the main topics.


ENV632 Air Pollution Modeling2

This course more focuses on numerical schemes and theoretical backgrounds needed to understand air pollution in urban and regional-scale air quality modeling. Sensitivity tests and uncertainty checks will be performed on a selected episode case. FORTRAN lab is included.


ENV633 Air Quality Management Ⅰ

Transport and chemical and physical transformation of air pollutants will be taught. Prior to developing air quality improvement plans, identifying and understanding air pollution phenomena will be discussed. This course covers indoor and outdoor air pollution.


ENV634 Air Quality Management II

Regional-scale air pollution such as acid rain, climate change, ozone hall will be taught. The fate of air pollutants including emissions, meteorological condition and transport, dry and wet deposition will be discussed.


ENV635 Atomospheric Chemistry

Gas-phase chemistry in the troposphere is important to understand the fate of intermediate and secondary air pollutants such as ozone, PAN, and PM2.5. Theories on chemical reactions, photolysis, the role of VOC to form ozone will be discussed.


ENV641 Advanced Environmental Technology I

This course is designed for engineers responsible for reviewing plans for the installation of bag house, electrostatic precipitators. The course reviews procedures for evaluating the performance of particulate control devices used to reduce particulate emissions from industrial sources.


ENV653 Advanced Hazardous Waste Management

Sources and characteristics of hazardous wastes, legal aspects of hazardous waste management, significance of hazardous wastes as air, water and soil pollutants. Principles and applications of conventional and specialized hazardous waste control technologies.


ENV661 Life Cycle Assessment

Theory of LCA including four core elements :goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation is the main topics in this course. Emphasis is given to the advanced topics such as uncertainty analysis and input output analysis applied to LCA.


ENV662 Practice of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Application of the LCA theory to actual product and service systems are main topics in this course. LCA softwares such as Sima Pro, PASS, TOTAL are used in the implementation of LCA in the class.


ENV663 Advanced Eco-product regulation and standard

Product related environmental regulations including RoHS, WEEE, ErP, REACH, among others and their impact on the industry are discussed in depth inn this course. International standards including ISO 14062, 14067, 14020 series, 14040 series and IEC 62430 are also dealt with here.


ENV664 Advanced Eco-product evaluation and certification

This course focuses on the impact of the BAT(Best Available Technology)on the mitigation of the environmental impact of a product and service. In depth discussion from the report on the product related environmental regulation and ISO/IEC standards are main topics here. Improvement ideas will be derived from the key factors derived from the discussions.


ENV665 Simulation of LCA

A case study will be implemented to generate environmental product declaration (EPD) from the analysis of the LCA results. The product category rules (PCR) are discussed and sample PCR will be developed in the class. Sample products will be chosen and LCA based on the ISO 14040/14044 be conducted in the class.


ENV666 Simulation of ecodesign

This in-depth course on ecodesign delas wiis based on the understanding o fthe two ecodesign courses, advanced ecodesign and practice of ecodesign. Students will conduct case study by applying all the principles and practices to the product and service they choose. Not only environmental aspects but also economic aspects are considered and weighting between the two aspects are also considered.


ENV667 Advanced ecodesign

Basics of ecodesign including product modeling, environmental assessment, stakeholder analysis, function analysis, product development processes, key environmental parameters identification, ecodesign tasks, variants generation, product concept selection are covered in this course. Accompanying tools such as LCT matrix, EQFD and EBM, Ecodesign PILOT are also introduced.


ENV668 Practice of ecodesign

Application of the ecodesign basics to the actual product is the core of this course. A sample product is chosen and all the ecodesign procedure and tools are used for the ecodesign. The practice also include the application of the CE marking required by the EU on the product exported to the EU.


ENV981 Advanced Environmental Impact Assessment

Environmental impact assessment due to human activities and the model formulation for the assessment are discussed. In particular, impact on the air quality, water quality, noise, vibration, and ecosystem are assessed in the course using the prediction model.


ENV982 Advanced Environmental Policy

Means and methods for formulation environmental policy based on environmental science and technology are discussed in this course. Comparison will be made between domestic policies as well as foreign policies.
